School of Physical and Mineral Sciences

In addition to the academic Departments, there are two centres:

  • Materials Modelling Centre, a centre of excellence that specializes in materials modelling applying computational approach to the science of materials in order to predict and understand the physic-chemical properties of a huge variety of materials such as minerals, alloys, polymers, oxides, and materials related to energy storage technologies.
  • University of Limpopo Science Centre, a vehicle through which much of the Faculty community engagement is realized. Its main function is to hold lectures, interactive exhibitions, workshops, and live demonstrations all with the aim of involving the general public in explorations of the different facets of science, engineering and technology. The centre also serves to strengthen and support the Department of Education in the Limpopo Province and other initiatives addressing science and mathematics teaching and learning.

In pursuing its vision, in line with the Faculty of Science and Agriculture strategic direction, the School of Physical and Mineral Sciences sets its target on the contribution to the developmental needs of Limpopo Province and South Africa at large. With no less than 136 operating mines, mining is the premier economic sector within Limpopo Province. This is one of a number of areas targeted by the Limpopo Employment, Growth and Development Plan (LEGDP). The School is privileged through its Geology division, which was re-introduced in 2008, to be in a position to enhance the LEGDP by providing appropriate teaching, research and community engagement.

A new dawn for the School, one which is filled with opportunities and great challenges is upon us. Continuous improvements to the curriculum through regular programme reviews in order to meet the demands of learners, employers and other stakeholders will provide a firm foundation for meeting our objectives. The School invites you to join hands and walk with us through this exciting journey.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the University General Admission Requirements that guides admission for study at the University, the following applies for entry into this programme:
Admission to Master’s studies is dependent on the candidate being in possession of an appropriate BSc. Honours degree, or an equivalent degree qualification. MSc is a research degree which is awarded on the basis of a written dissertation. There is no course work component. The degree is done under guidance of a qualified Supervisor who is an academic staff member of the relevant department.  Potential candidates should contact staff members to discuss possible projects based on their own and the staff members’ research interests.

In addition to the University General Admission Requirements that guides admission for study at the University for first time entering students, the following applies for entry into this programme:
Admission to doctoral studies is dependent on the candidate being in possession of an appropriate MSc degree, or an equivalent degree qualification. PhD is a research degree which is awarded on the basis of a written thesis. There is no course work component. The degree is done under guidance of a qualified supervisor who is an academic staff member of the relevant department.  Potential candidates should contact staff members to discuss possible projects based on their own and the staff members’ research interests.
